Definitions
Award Letter. A funding agreement for a sustainability project authorized by, at the minimum, SSC and the project lead. Award letters have specific authorization requirements dependent on the grant type.
CFOP. Chart, Fund, Org Program Code; the method designed for the financial system used by University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign to identify funding and expenses by the campus (Chart), the type of funding used (Fund), the department using that funding source (Org) and the type of funding/expense used/incurred (Program code).
Cost. Any required exchange for entry to a Program or Event.
Departmental Sponsorship. Projects that are meaningfully supported by a university department require departmental sponsorship in the form of a faculty/staff advisor who will provide logistical and financial support for the project. SSC funding is transferred to a stand-alone CFOP created for each SSC-funded award.
Event. A program, activity, or experience intended to share the mission/purpose of the Student Organization with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign student body.
Expense Report. A document reconciling awarded microgrant with actual expenditures. Expense reports are due to SSC no later than May 15th of the fiscal year in which the microgrant was awarded.
Faculty/Staff Advisor. A representative of a university department that serves as a sponsor for a student-led project. All SSC-funded student-led projects require a faculty/staff advisor.
Financial Contact. A representative of a university department who has the authority to request CFOPs, make university purchases, and generate financial reports on behalf of a sustainability project's team. The financial contact is distinct from the faculty/staff advisor and the project lead.
Fiscal Year. July 1 – June 30.
Funding Period. A defined period of time during which applications are open for microgrants and eligible Student Organizations may apply for funding. Funding periods are defined by the SSC and may differ from semester to semester.
Honoraria. A non-contractual gift to a speaker/performer.
Illinois Student. An individual currently enrolled in at least one credit hour at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Native Plant. A plant occurring naturally in Illinois prior to European settlement.
Off Campus. Limited to property in Champaign County not owned by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
On Campus. On-Campus is defined as any property owned by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (i.e., Union, Allerton, I-Hotel, Main Quad, etc.)
Organic Cloth. Made from natural fibers like cotton, wool, or linen. Materials are grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
Program. A Program is an event, activity, or experience intended to share the mission/purpose of the Student Organization with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign student body.
Reputable/Established Thrift Store. Has a physical location and recognizable store name and can generate itemized receipts with their digitally printed name on them.
Step 1/Step 2 Award. A grant for a department-sponsored project 1) for which a currently enrolled Illinois student is the project lead (not a student organization) and that requires more than $10,000.00 OR 2) for which an Illinois faculty or staff is the project lead and any amount of funding is requested. Projects with approved Step 1 applications move on to the Step 2 application phase and, if approved, will then receive SSC funding.
Student-Led Under $10K Award. A grant for a department-sponsored project that requires $10,000.00 or less and for which a currently enrolled Illinois student is the project lead.
Sustainability Microgrant. A grant of $750 or less available to eligible Illinois student organizations for the purchase of approved sustainable items.
Sustainability Project. An Illinois department-sponsored project that aims to enhance sustainability on campus and impact students.
Sustainably Sourced. Sourced from producers, ideally local, with a direct commitment to environmentally friendly production and distribution practices.
Unused Funds. Allocated funding not used by a student organization or project team. For microgrants, all unused funds are automatically returned to SSC after May 15 of the fiscal year in which a microgrant is awarded. For projects, unused funds are automatically returned to SSC when the project has expired, as indicated on the award letter.
