About
Sammy joined the Student Engagement team in the summer of 2020. He works primarily with the Student Sustainability unit, while also serving as the advisor to the Student Sustainability Committee (SSC). He is also involved in other sustainability initiatives and programs across campus and in the local Champaign-Urbana community. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Sammy was a researcher for the University of Illinois Energy and Biosciences Institute where he helped to improve the breeding and selection methods of bioenergy crops for alternative energy resources, sustainable food production and environmental stewardship. Eventually he went back to school to pursue his graduate degree while also serving as a teaching assistant for the School of Integrative Biology and the Department of Linguistics. Upon completion of his program, Sammy taught science for 4 years at Unity High School in Tolono, IL, and Jefferson Middle School in Champaign, IL. While teaching at Jefferson, he was selected as Napleton’s 2019 Champaign-Urbana Teacher of the Year. Outside of work, Sammy is a perpetually disappointed Chicago Bulls fan and enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
